6:00 PM John O’Sullivan Parent Education Event
The Bolles Parent Association is delighted to announce this exciting presentation and the opportunity for interactive discussion. John started the "Changing the Game Project" in 2012 after two decades as a soccer player and coach on the youth, high school, college and professional level. He brings to the table a wealth of practical, hands-on knowledge garnered through years of working with players and their families on sport specific development, fitness and nutrition, college recruiting, and most importantly, nurturing positive, healthy, and supportive relationships between parents and their young athletes. He has compiled much of this information in his #1 bestselling book Changing the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, and Giving Youth Sports Back to our Kids. While his talk will mainly focus on youth and sports, his message transcends athletics. John will be discussing the ways we can help our children perform to their potential, while at the same time giving them ownership and enjoyment of their sports and extra-curricular disciplines. He will be presenting the latest science and psychology on performance and athletic development.

This special Parent Education program is addressed to all Lower School and Middle School parents. Sponsored by the Bolles' Parent Association

8:00 AM - 3:45 PM Make a difference Day for 9th Grade
We are very excited to bring you news of a new venture on the Bolles Upper School San Jose Campus. On Wednesday, October 15, our freshmen class will take part in the School's second annual Make a Difference Day. This hands-on event is designed to celebrate the importance of giving back to the community and helping those who struggle to help themselves. Our first Make a Difference Day was very well received by students and by the organizations with whom we partnered, and we are confident that this year's program will be a highlight of the school year for your student(s), as they experience community service in active, tangible ways.

The school day will begin with students arriving as usual on the San Jose Campus, where they will gather in the Davis Gym as a class for an overview of community service and an explanation of the day. Once separated into groups, students will head out into the Jacksonville community to participate in one of several coordinated service projects with local charitable organizations. A box lunch will be provided for students, with some groups eating at their locations, and other groups returning to the San Jose Campus. The School will sponsor the cost of this lunch. Later that afternoon, students will break into small groups where they will discuss the activities, and then will reconvene as a class to reflect on the day. Students will be dismissed at the normal time of 3:45 p.m.

Our goal for this day is to give the students the opportunity to experience what community service looks and feels like, what the real-life benefits are and what the rewards are to all involved. We want the students to see there are countless ways they can help others and how building upon Bolles' force of goodness can stir meaningful community change.

Freshmen have received a flyer listing opportunities available to them, and they have been asked to rank the activities according to their interest. We will make every effort to match each student with one of his or her top choices. Students also have been asked to supply a T-shirt size, and they will receive a free T-shirt they are to wear on October 15. Further guidelines about dress code will be provided to the students after site assignments have been made.

At Bolles, we believe that student-driven service to others embodies the very spirit of volunteerism. We continue to encourage our students to give willingly of their time and talents without requiring them to do so. As such, students have no quotas of service hours to fulfill – community service at Bolles is a school-wide tenet, not an obligation. Our mission is to prepare students for college and life. Being aware of and serving the needs of others is fundamental to that preparation. While active involvement in community service can be an important part of a student's college application, having a focus on others is the vital part that ultimately shows a giving person. The goal of Bolles Make a Difference Day is to expose students to a variety of service opportunities in the community, and to provide a format for hands-on experience with such service.

We are excited about and looking forward to Make a Difference Day! Please let us know if we can answer any questions.
